I’m based in New York City and Philadelphia and work out of a studio at Crane Old School. I teach 16mm filmmaking at Mono No Aware, video at UPenn, and performance/installation at Brooklyn College, while offering&#38;nbsp;videography services to artists and organizations.&#38;nbsp;

Artist statementI work across mediums to explore the ways collectivity is lived and imagined in the absence of institutional frameworks such as religion and the family. I consider how social desires are articulated under these conditions, reckoning with the contradictions of contemporary life, particularly where pleasure and pain are entangled in visions of utopia and rememberance. With a particular jewish sensibility, I explore the poetics of passing, devotion, and opacity to confront legacies of capture and imagined freedoms that continue to structure cultural life today.

Rudy Gerson (b. 1993, New York City; raised in Las Vegas, NV) is an artist and educator working across print, still and moving image, performance, and collaboration in a practice which explores how groups, identities, and collectivity form in the absence of institutional frameworks such as religion, the family, or the party. Through subjects like sports, nationalism, and dance, works consider how collective desires are articulated in these contexts, reckoning with the contradictions of contemporary life, particularly where pleasure and violence are entangled.

Rudy has shown work with Mono No Aware (NYC), Commonweal (Philadelphia), Atelier Gallery (Philadelphia), Whammy! (Los Angeles). In addition to a studio practice, Rudy has collaborated with artists and organizations on design, video services, and performances: Collaborative Cataloging Japan, Asian Arts Initiative, Abrons Arts Center (2019, Jonathan González; 2022, Slauson Malone), LMCC's River-to-River festival (2022, Jonathan González), BRIC (2022, Jonathan González) and has worked with Tania Bruguera (2018), Julie Tolentino (2023), and Paul Pfeiffer (2025). Rudy is based in New York City and Philadelphia and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and Brooklyn College.

	Hands on Earth (Tuesday May 14 2024)

Hands on Earth (Tuesday May 14 2024) takes place over a day of collective demonstration in Philadelphia. Shot on 16mm, the film focuses on hands as poetic indices of expression, exertion, and want. The medium of photochemical film marks the alchemy of and in public protest, while departing from typical protest portraiture of the face and the sign in favor of a meditation on the pleasures and pains of the political body. The film invites a feeling-with, while carving space away from the way recording and the journalistic record prioritize virality, speed, and programmatic legibility.

	The Broadwood Suite

4K Single Channel Video, 22 minutes

The Broadwood Suite is a video installation that engages the history of a professional Jewish basketball team in Philadelphia and the social dances they would hold after their home games&#38;nbsp; on the ballroom floor of The Broadwood Hotel between 1933 and 1947. Now, the site is a parking garage. 

The film takes the form of a musical suite in 5 movements and offers an alternative to the dominant historical narrative. With a focus on absence, surfaces, and missing partners, the film is a sensuous play with the latent possibilities and intimacies that circulate in the memory of these gatherings. Choreographies of sport, social dance, and the city move in this visual album and speculative ethnography, where the viewer is invited and ultimately trusted to use imagination to associate into new meanings.

The works assembled here are in conversation with the history of a professional Jewish basketball team in Philadelphia, the SPHAs, and the social dances they would hold after their games on the ballroom floor of The Broadwood Hotel between 1932 and 1949.This series considers how communal choreographies of 
competition, play, and dance are entangled by using consciously dated 
techniques of typewriting and blind embossed printing. The typing introduces historical 
context through lists, concrete poetry, and experimental textual 
drawing, while the prints act as ghostly images of objects no longer present. Together, the image and the text 
turn away from the dominant historiography of a team, the 
event, and its traces while speculating on the unthinkable potentials 
within. The potentials are memories of the impossible, where cruising 
and interethnic intimacy thrives undetectably in the shared site of 
sport and dance.
 The installation includes The Broadwood Suite, a film in 5 movements.

This work offers an ambivalent intervention on the semiotics of nationalism and the symbols that help construct it. Both playful and foreboding, this work sidesteps the question of the flag and takes up its framing devices, namely the pole and its ornamental top. Within vexillology, or the study of flags, the finial is a relatively unexamined decorative element of a flag’s presentation. This work suspends and exaggerates, using sounding objects and sonic material (brass) in an austere and quiet manner to offer a question and a critique of poles, ornaments, and procession.
